John is a vancouver based Art Director and Production Designer who brings breadth of experience, the agility to design across Film & Television styles and genres supported by technical production expertise. HIs management and strategic planning and collaborative approach with all departments bolster the storytelling aspects of Production and Art Direction. With 20 years experience on close to 40 productions he is able to see the big picture while integrating all the fine details, bringing the director's vision to life in fast paced production environments.

Strong interests in Architecture, Interiors, Film & Photography, Graphics & Fine Arts drew him to Toronto's Ryerson University, where he graduated from from their multi-faceted Bachelor of Applied Arts Design Program.

​

His storytelling career began with a Toronto based, multi-disciplinary design firm noted for building international brand spaces through blue sky thinking and narrative. Narrative informed a multi-layered approach, where the threads of Achitecture, Interior Design, Graphics and communications were woven together, creating a contextual fabric that contributed to creative and engaging spaces. This was ideal training for his

later career in Film & Television & Streaming video.

Leisure based projects across Canada, the US, London, Italy, Switzerland & Asia, brought exciting opportunities to use his project management, master planning, envisioning and sketch concept illustration skills on the design of hotels, themed attractions, shopping environments, restaurants, homes & work places.

​

Seeking new challenges with opportunities for using his imagination he embraced a move to Vancouver, pursuing a long standing passion for Production Design & Art Direction for Film, Television and streaming video. Previous people management experience has proven to be an asset in leading crews and for cost and schedule management. His master planning and creative visualization skills are invaluable in the set / stage planning process.

With the heart of an artist and the mind of a strategic planner he seeks to uncover opportunities to enrich a directors vision. Productions benefit from his experience building narrative through design, developing character through the intentional and thoughtful relationship between set design, symbols, objects, color and texture.

​

His fascination with different countries and how the story of their cultures are told through their history and vernacular styles; art, design, architecture, cuisine and clothing is a strong motivator for travel. Trips to noted Gallery, Museum & Science Center destinations are considered an essential part of his life long education, adding to what the can contribute to his work in Film, Television & Streaming Video.
